SAFe 5.0 — An overview

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a set of organization and workflow patterns intended to guide enterprises in scaling lean and agile practices. It is one of the well-known scaled agile frameworks that address the challenges faced when scaling beyond a single team. SAFe is made freely available by Scaled Agile, Inc., which retains the copyrights and registered trademarks.
SAFe promotes alignment, collaboration, and delivery across large numbers of agile teams. It was developed by and for practitioners, by leveraging three primary bodies of knowledge: agile software development, lean product development, and systems thinking. SAFe Version 4.5 was released in June 2017 while the latest edition, version 5.0, was released in January 2020.

SAFe 5.0 for teams

This is one of the basic training and certifications where the focus is more on establishing the team agility for implementing scaled agile practice to program, large solution, portfolio and full SAFe.5.0. Scaled Agile Academy has decided to have this fundamental course designed to educate all teams, leaders and stakeholders which would be a part of implementing SAFe in an enterprise.

The training is intended to develop the skills essential to become a high-performing team member of an Agile Release Train (ART). It also intended for teams to learn how to collaborate effectively with other teams while working the same Agile Release Train — by becoming a SAFe® 5 Practitioner.

SAFe 5.0 for teams’ training is conducted in two full days, eight hours each day either in classroom mode or in virtual mode. SPC 5.0 would be an instructor for this workshop and he/she would take this workshop with prescribed content and activities mandated by SAFe 5.0.

In this training course, participants gain an in-depth understanding of the Agile Release Trains, how would they deliver business value, and what you can do to effectively perform your role using Scrum, Kanban, and XP. Participants also learn how to write stories and break down features, plan and execute Iterations, and plan Program Increments. Finally, they would also learn about the continuous delivery pipeline and DevOps culture, how to effectively integrate with other teams in the program, and what it takes to continuously improve the train.

The target audience for this training would generally be — all team members, teams leads, project managers or program managers, business analysts, system architects, product owners, scrum masters, Change agents, Agile practitioners/coaches, QA, Operations and infrastructure teams or leads and all those who are involved directly or indirectly in scaled agile implementation.
As said above, SAFe 5.0 for team training basically aimed to perform the role of a SAFe® Practitioner, so the following are the learning objectives planned to achieve in these two days and contents, exercised and activities are revolving around the same.
• Apply SAFe to scale Lean and Agile development in their enterprise
• Know their team and its role on the Agile Release Train
• Know all other teams on the train, their roles, and the dependencies between the teams
• Plan iterations
• Execute iterations and demonstrate the value
• Plan Program Increments
• Integrate and work with other teams on the train

Since this is one of the basic training from SAFe 5.0, anyone can attend it regardless of the experience. However, if participants know System Development Life Cycle, Agile concepts and principles, fundamentals of Scrum, Kanban, XP etc, it would be an added advantage.
Completion of this training course will give each participant access to the online examination for one month from the date of completion of the training. Participants must undergo this online examination in one month’s time and acquire the certification which is valid for one year. Participants must renew it every year to keep it active. Along with this training and certification, participants will also get all related study materials as part of your Learning Plan in the SAFe Community Platform.
